Class 8- Miss T Parr

And after spring, came summer!

Unique Unicorns are now into their final term as year 5/6 pupils here at Summer Lane. So far, they have lived up to their name as being truly unique, all with a different talent and celebration to bring to class. The children have quickly developed into conscientious, self-motivated and resilient learners with tenacity and flare. Outside our classroom we have a selection of recent work from both Numeracy and Literacy which demonstrates the children’s commitment and improvements.

In autumn term, we enjoyed a class trip to The Deep which enhanced our topic: The Sea. The children linked all areas of learning to this topic and produced some excellent work to be proud of. Together, we devised a class assembly which showcased talents such as: public speaking, narrative writing, poetry, sport and journalism.

Spring term brought further achievement in sport with many children representing the school in tournaments including: football, basketball, cross country running and gymnastics. Learning in the classroom focussed on the rainforest where the children created some exceptional homework projects, again to be very proud of. Members of Unique Unicorns were successful in a local poetry competition where two of our pupils were crowned first place and runner up after judges were wowed by their maturity and empathy when writing Halacoust poetry. These two pupils were given the opportunity to meet survivor of the Holocaust, Iby Knill, as well as receiving vouchers to spend at Meadowhall! Well worth the hard work!

With summer term finally upon us and the optimism of warmer weather, we plan to take much of our learning outside in order to fully utilise and enjoy the outdoor classroom (bottom playground). Here, we will initially focus on reading, which has been a large area of development in Unique Unicorns throughout the course of the year. In Unique Unicorns, we love to read! The children have made great progression in their skills as readers and enjoy regular D.E.A.R (Drop Everything And Read) sessions where they can become immersed in their chosen book!

Our final topic this year is Ancient Greece. Although we have only just begun, the children have once again made me incredibly proud with their homework projects- these were completed during the Easter break in order to start the learning with a thirst. The projects, on first inspection, show just how creative, enthused and ambitious the members of Unique Unicorns really are!

So far it has been an excellent year and I cannot wait to see what more these incredible young people have to bring to the class!

Thank you Unicorns,

Miss Parr.
