Special Needs (SEND)
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Provision at Summer Lane Primary School
At Summer Lane Primary School, we are committed to providing an inclusive and supportive learning environment where all pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), are valued, respected, and able to thrive.
Our Vision for SEND
We believe that every child is entitled to a broad, balanced, and inclusive curriculum. We aim to remove barriers to learning and ensure that all children with SEND make good progress, both academically and personally, in line with their peers.
Our SEND Aims
To identify and assess pupils with SEND as early as possible.
To ensure all children have access to a high-quality, differentiated curriculum.
To work in partnership with parents, carers, and external agencies.
To promote pupils’ self-esteem and emotional well-being.
To prepare children for their next stage of education.
Definition of SEND
Children have special educational needs if they have a learning difficulty or disability that calls for special educational provision to be made. This includes children with:
Communication and interaction needs
Cognition and learning needs
Social, emotional and mental health needs
Sensory and/or physical needs
We follow the SEND Code of Practice (2015) and use the four areas of need to support identification and provision.
Our SENDCo
Our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCo) is: Frances Harrison.
You can contact our SENDCo via the school office or by email at:

The SENDCo works closely with teachers, teaching assistants, families, and external agencies to ensure children receive the support they need.
Identification and Support
Children’s needs are identified through regular assessment and ongoing monitoring. We operate a graduated approach:
Assess – Identify the child’s needs.
Plan – Develop a support plan in collaboration with parents.
Do – Implement interventions and strategies.
Review – Evaluate effectiveness and adjust as needed.
Some children may require additional support through targeted interventions, and in some cases, an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) may be appropriate.
Working with Parents and Carers
We value the input of parents and carers and believe that working together leads to the best outcomes. Regular meetings and reviews are held to discuss your child’s progress and any changes in provision.
Inclusion and Access
All children are encouraged to participate fully in school life, including trips, extracurricular activities, and wider school events. Reasonable adjustments are made to ensure full access and participation.
Training and Expertise
All staff receive regular training in SEND, including specific areas such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and mental health. This ensures we remain up-to-date and equipped to meet a range of needs.
