Miss Wellock is our class teacher, joined by Mrs Harper. We work as a team, so if you have any questions or queries feel free to ask either one of us.

We are very lucky to also have Miss Washington working in our class this year.

Mrs Hall will teach the children in Class One every Monday morning.

Miss Frampton and Mr Townsend are also joining us from York St John University - they will be in class every Wednesday and Thursday.

READING IS THE KEY- please continue to read at home with your child. More information down the page :)

NINJA SPELLINGS- We are continuing with the challenge. Spellings will be quizzed every Friday.

Summer 1

Topic

Our topic this half term is 'Brilliant Barnsley'! We have already been on a walk around our local area where we spotted all kinds of different buildings.

In geography, we will be thinking about the location of Barnsley within England, the United Kingdom, Europe and the World! We will also study some local area maps and use simple compass directions (North, east, south and west) and locational and directional language (e.g. near, far, left, right) to describe the location of features and routes on the maps.

We will be using aerial photographs to recognise landmarks in Barnsley and we will sort these into human and physical features.

In history we will be learning about the Mining History of Barnsley, which we think the children will find really interesting.

If anyone has a family member who worked in the mines - please let us know!

Literacy

This half term we are taking our houses on an adventure to Africa! We will write our own stories about what we see as our houses fly out of Barnsley and what we see as they land in Africa. We are using Disney Pixar 'Up' as a hook into our learning.
We will also be doing lots of drama work this half term, imagining that we are a child in the olden days who worked down the mine, we will also be hot seating a miner- asking him lots of questions about what life was like! This will lead us to create some poems about mining.

Maths

In maths this half term we will be

*Using our knowledge of place value (tens and ones) to solve additions and subtractions.

*Naming 2D and 3D shapes and exploring their properties.

*Using the mathematical symbols x and ÷

*Counting forwards and backwards in 2s, 5s and 10s.

*Using standard units of measure - cm/m/ml/l/g/kg

RE, Art/DT, PSHE, PE

In DT we are making our own junk model houses- we will paint them and use collage materials to add features and detail.

In art we will create mixed media pictures-using both paint and pastel to create a scene.

This half term in SEAL we will be thinking about 'changes' focussing on getting ready for our new class, making new friends and meeting our new teacher.

In PE we are focussing on balance and control. We will also be playing team games.

Homework

Homework will be sent home every Friday- we ask for this to be returned to school by the following Wednesday. This allows us time to look over your children's work, and stick new sheets in ready to be sent home.

Each week there will be a maths and literacy activity. Please note that as a school we follow a homework scheme and the work given is age appropriate.

Reading

Your child will have an individual read with an adult once a week. They will also take part in guided reading, where they will share a reading book in a group with an adult once a week. Please be aware that during busy times of the year (e.g Christma, school trips etc) your child may only read once a week, be this guided or individual.

When we listen to your child read we will change their reading books- however feel free to change them with your child during morning work time. Reading books are in the Key Stage 1 library.

READING IS THE KEY! Please listen to your child read at home, every time you record in their reading diary that they have shared a book with you at home they will receive a stamp on their chart. When the chart is full they can choose from the prize box!

Spellings

Children will bring home a list of spellings each Friday. The children will be quizzed on these the following Friday.

We are continuing with our 'Spelling Ninja' challenge and children will continue to earn bands on their ninja pencils.
